Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Scott was raised by her grandmother as an sole daughter by her grandmother. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. She studied secondary education over there while working two jobs. She planned to become an high school English teacher. She was unable to fulfill the dream after studying for three years and working as a teaching assistant in college, she decided to leave. A poet by trade started performing, she was able to perform at live poetry recitals. Then she joined with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create the group. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by the duo. At a Roots performance, she came out as an artist. Afterward she secured collaborations with artists such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. While on the Canada tour for The Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable experience performing. She was the first signing artist to Hidden Beach Recordings.
